Linda Werner transformed into the Hempress of Fashion, an accidental activist, upon reading the Emperor Wears No Clothes by Jack Herer. Compelled to shout out the truth worldwide she figured she could use fashion as her voice. Born the daughter of a seamstress in East Los Angeles, Linda has garment industry in her blood.

HEMP MEETS FASHION: SUBSTANCE COTERIE, INC. Launches Groundbreaking Eco-Friendly Clothing Line
Las Vegas, NV, February 16, 2010
SUBSTANCE men’s hemp clothing line has impressed buyers and retailers alike not only with the luxury and extraordinary softness of our hemp textile, but also with the unique messaging included inside. We strive to educate through fashion. Maintaining these ideals has set SUBSTANCE apart from other emerging clothing lines singularly focused on fashion.
Eco-friendliness and green products have recently soared to the forefront of American consciousness. Currently we source our hemp from China where it is grown freely. The SUBSTANCE movement is campaigning for the legal farming of hemp in the United States to make sourcing our hemp an even greener process. We have tapped into an uncharted market, making competitors almost nonexistent.
Agricultural Business Week’s 2008 article Hemp Fabric Goes High Fashion noted that several big- name designers such as Versace and Calvin Klein included Hemp fashion in their runway shows as part of their “Future Fashion Collections.” Most designers have not made these designs available to the public, putting SUBSTANCE at the forefront of the hemp revolution.
SUBSTANCE is unparalleled in three very distinctive ways. The first, most obvious element is the style of our line. The bold, contemporary designs are current with new trends and appeal to several tastes and fashion sensibilities. We carefully consider our color choices and graphics to stay current yet distinct.
The second major facet of our company is our luxurious fabric. Hemp is rarely used as the alternative to cotton, even though it is 3 times stronger. In addition, this miracle fabric is UV and mold resistant, less expensive to farm, and gets incredibly soft the more you wear it. It doesn’t wear out it wears in. Hemp could very well be the solution to many ecological problems. We are among the first few groundbreaking companies to bring attention to hemp through fashion, and continuing to tap into this market is the key to our success.
Third and perhaps most important, is the messaging inscribed in our shirts and apparel. SUBSTANCE, though it is defined by its cutting edge fashion, also stands for a global cause: the legalization of industrial hemp. This is the foundation of our line, and the main ingredient to our individuality.
The economy has taken a toll on the apparel industry, and thus, according to Standard and Poor’s, stores are focusing more on decreasing inventory to match consumer demand. Retailers are eager to purchase lines that will offer a unique product to consumers. Fashionable and unique, our clothing encourages thoughtful discussion and social responsibility.
We are proud members of the: Hemp Industries Association
